Installing Esri Maps for Office

Esri Maps for Office, part of the ArcGIS platform, is an add-in for Microsoft Office that brings mapping capabilities into Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. With Esri Maps for Office, you can easily create a geospatial view of your data by creating an interactive map that includes data from Excel and ArcGIS Online —all without leaving the MS Office environment.

  • MS Office 2010 or 2013 *Office 2016 is not currently supported
  • MS Windows 7, 8, or 8.1. *Windows 10 is not currently supported
  • Internet Explorer 9, 10, or 11

Installing Esri Maps for Office

1) Download the installer from the link below. Choose the bit version that matches your version of MS Office, not your system. *32 bit (x86) is the most common version of MS Office
2) Run the installer when the download is complete. The setup wizard will be displayed.

 3) The System Check will verify that you have the required software installed to run Esri Maps for Office. Click the Install Prerequisites button to automatically install any missing drivers or other software components.
You may be asked to restart after installing the prerequisites. You may wait until you finish the install to restart. You will have to restart the installer if you choose to restart immediately.Click Next to move to the next step

 4)  Click Next to install both the Excel and PowerPoint add-ins and accept the default install location Maps For Office - Install
 5)  From the Connection Settings screen, select My ArcGIS Online Organization.

 6) Restart your computer if you chose to wait after installing the prerequisites (if required).
 7) Start Excel or Powerpoint and use the Esri Maps ribbon to use the tools. The Getting Started wizard may be displayed to highlight some of the features.  Maps for Office Ribbon
8) Click the Sign In button on the ribbon. This will display the ArcGIS Online Sign In screen.

Click the USE YOUR UOR ACCOUNT button to sign in.
If you’re logged in to any other U of R services such as MyRedlands, Moodle, etc, you will be automatically signed in. If not, you will be redirected to the University’s login screen where you can enter your email address and password.

Changing ArcGIS Online Connection

Esri Maps for Office uses a connection to our ArcGIS Online “Organization” to retrieve data and perform analysis. If you enter the wrong url during setup (step 5 above), the add-in will not allow you to sign-in and therefore won’t work properly. Follow the steps below to change the ArcGIS Online connection in Excel.

1) Open MS Excel and open/create a worksheet.
2) Click the big File button up in the left-hand corner of the screen.
3) Click the Esri Maps button in the list that appears to the left and change the url to one of the following:
https://univredlands.maps.arcgis.comOR FOR THOSE IN THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

4) Restart Excel and use the Esri Maps ribbon to sign-in (see steps 7 & 8 above)
